DISCOVER ENCHANTING CHANIA
The city of Chania lies on top of Ancient Kydonia; one of the three most influential cities of the ancient Minoan civilization. For thousands of years the geographical position of island of Crete in the eastern Mediterranean Sea created the ideal conditions for nautical commerce to thrive. However opportunity also attracted conquerors and pirates. The city and its surrounding suburbs boast plenty of historical monuments, ruins and remnants of the Minoans, the classical times, Byzantium, the Venetians and the Ottomans that set foot on the island. This blend of natural beauties and unique habitats together with a long history, make Chania irresistible.
Chalepa -Tabakaria
About 2 kilometers, northeast of the center of Chania, you will discover the most aristocratic quarters of Chania with buildings and residences dating back from the late 19th century and early 20th century, when the city was expanding outside the city walls and merchants, doctors, entrepreneurs and diplomats created this new found hub. The oxymoron lies in the fact that adjacent to Chalepa, one would find the city’s tanneries (Tabakaria), where hard and malodorous labor work was taking place. Once there were 80 active tanneries, now only 2-3 remain. The eerie, abandoned stone buildings on the coast have a certain charm and some of them have been turned into touristic businesses.
Northern coast
The northern coastline of Chania’s prefecture has a lasting appeal to the visitor. With endless sandy beaches and secluded coves, the Thodorou island, the busy village of Agia Marina and Platanias, this side of the island has a piece of everything for everyone. One may find organized beaches awarded with blue flags, water sports, local tavernas and restaurants with ethnic cuisines, bars, clubs, super markets and gift shops, even inland picturesque villages that keep the local flair. The entire northern coast, west of Chania city is an ideal place for leisure and adeventure.

Venetian Harbor
If one could take an iconic picture of Chania that would one of the Venetian harbor. This idyllic, picturesque harbor has a long history and has witnessed many changes throughout the centuries. Most of its surrounding buildings that now house boutique hotels, restaurants and bars, were built by the Venetians that is why, when walking through the narrow alleys it feels like being in Italy. Two monuments make Chania’s Venetian harbor unique; The emblematic Egyptian Lighthouse and the Ottoman Mosque Yali Tzamisi.
Chania’s Old Town
The old Town of Chania is fascinating and constitutes a living testimony of the historical timeline of the entire prefecture. The old town was built on the ruins of ancient Kydonia and later on, during the Venetian era was fortified with surrounding walls to protect the city from invaders. During the Ottoman era, many Christian churches were turned into mosques, and the population was geographically divided according to religion. The Greek Christians lived in the upper west side called Topanas, followed by the adjacent Jewish quarters. The Turks lived around Splantzia Square with the imposing plane tree that still stands in the middle of the square. The entire old town is a maze of narrow alleys filled with charming boutique hotels, shops, restaurants and bars.
